The central illustration depicts the desperate battle of June 26, 1867, when approximately 300 Cheyenne warriors under Roman Nose attacked Fort Wallace — a poorly fortified frontier post on the Smoky Hill Trail — and were met by 50 mounted troopers of Company G, Seventh U.S. Cavalry, under Captain Albert Barnitz, who charged out boldly against the overwhelming force in a hand-to-hand fight. The full illustration page, sketched by artist Phil D. Fisher and photographed by Major Calhoun and Dr. William Bell at the scene, includes additional panels documenting the attack on Carley and Doherty, the removal of Carleys body to Ellsworth, and the arrow-ridden body of Sergeant Wyllyams — making this one of the most visceral and historically specific Indian Wars illustrations published in the American press.
