1871 Springfield MA Handwritten Debt Collection Letter Iron Moulder J J Manning
Original July 18, 1871 handwritten letter from Springfield, Massachusetts concerning collection of an account against J. J. Manning. The writer reports that Manning is working in “Monument,” identifies him as an iron moulder, and warns the recipient, “Don't approach him. If you do he will slip you. He's very slippery.” Signed at the bottom “Jno. L. Rice”; research located a Civil War veteran Colonel John L. Rice associated with Springfield, but the signer has not been conclusively identified as that individual.

Dear Colby Jr
Dear Sir
Encl find a/c against J. J. Manning.
I am informed he is working in Monument.
He is an iron moulder by trade. Collect if you
can. Don't approach him. If you do he will slip
you. He's very slippery.
