Applegate was originally settled in 1849 by Lisbon Applegate, having come to California with his son, George, from Missouri. Part of a family who first emigrated to America in the 17th century, the Applegates bought acreage aboveClipper Gap, California, and established a fruit ranch there. The main house of the Applegate Ranch was located where Oliver\'s gas station and bar sits today. Lisbon eventually returned to Missouri but his son, George W. Applegate, stayed.

As the town grew, it was called Bear River House for its proximity to theBear River, a short distance northwest. When a post office was established 1855, the community officially became known as Lisbon in honor of its founder. George W. Applegate became postmaster, and in the 1870s, the settlement was renamed Applegate also to honor its Franklin Wilcoxson, one of Sacramento\'s earliest merchants.arrived in Weaverville, California in 1849 with his brother Jackson Wilcoxson after a long cross country trek from Missouri. Jefferson was born in Mercer County, Kentucky on February 2, 1809. He moved with his family to Missouri in 1819.

In 1850 Jefferson and his brother moved to Sacramento where they set up a merchandise business at 125 J. Street. The business operated until 1852 when it closed. Jefferson Wilcoxson went into partnership with James Farris of James Farris & Co. a grain and stock trader. They purchased a part of the Hardy Grant, a tract of one thousand seven hundred and eighty acres, located near Woodland.

In subsequent years Jefferson Wilcoxson extended his investments into warehousing, mining, banking, investments, farming, and livestock in Sacramento and other nearby counties. He maintained a business office in downtown Sacramento from 1850 to 1898.

Jefferson Wilcoxson resided for many years on his farm in the community of Washington, across the Sacramento River, south and west from the Sacramento Embarcadero. He moved his residence to the Golden Eagle Hotel in Sacramento in 1885 and lived in hotels and rooming houses until his death on April 8, 1898.
