Original 19th-Century East Texas Merchant's Ledger — Nacogdoches, Texas — Circa 1880s–1890
An evocative surviving piece of East Texas commercial and social history, this original handwritten account ledger documents the everyday business of a general store in the Nacogdoches area during the late nineteenth century.
Measuring approximately 11½ × 7 inches, the ledger contains numerous pages of handwritten entries recording merchandise, quantities, prices, calculations, and accounts. Its worn nineteenth-century cloth binding, decorative stamped borders, and densely written pages give it considerable historical character.
Especially interesting are the original pieces of Nacogdoches commercial stationery preserved inside the ledger:
Smindler & Smith, dealers in general merchandise, located at the northeast corner of the Public Square, Nacogdoches, Texas. One account sheet is dated October 19, 1890, and addressed to Mr. J. Townsend.
B. F. Smith, dealer in dry goods, clothing, boots, shoes, groceries, etc., Nacogdoches, Texas. A printed business sheet has been reused for handwritten calculations.
These pieces provide identifiable connections to actual nineteenth-century East Texas businesses and help establish the ledger's regional significance.
The manuscript entries offer glimpses of the merchandise and transactions that sustained rural and small-town Texas communities. Visible references include everyday goods such as collars, undershirts, overalls, blankets, shoes, and other supplies, along with extensive monetary calculations.
The Nacogdoches connection is particularly appealing. One of the oldest settlements in Texas, Nacogdoches was an established East Texas commercial center by the 1880s. This ledger offers tangible evidence of the region's merchant economy, local businesses, and ordinary commercial life.
Potentially useful for researchers interested in:
Nacogdoches County and East Texas Texas merchants and general stores

Texas economic and social history
Antique manuscripts, account books, and commercial ephemera
The ledger is offered intact, including the handwritten accounts and associated printed business stationery shown in the photographs.
Condition
Poor to Fair — heavily worn, fragile historical ledger.
Original cloth-covered boards with extensive discoloration, staining, rubbing, and surface grime. Decorative stamped borders remain visible.
Binding is severely weakened, with extensive spine deterioration, exposed stitching, loose sections, and partially detached pages. Interior paper exhibits considerable age toning, staining, soiling, creasing, tears, edge chipping, and occasional paper loss. Many pages contain heavy handwritten calculations and overlapping entries; some writing is faded or difficult to decipher.
Noticeable stale tobacco/smoke odor consistent with storage in a smoker's home. The odor has not been treated or removed.
Some pages and inserted papers may be loose or displaced. Completeness has not been established.
Despite its rough condition, substantial manuscript content survives, including identifiable East Texas business stationery and numerous legible transactions.
Please examine all photographs carefully. This is an authentic, heavily used historical document, sold as found.
