1882 Dakota Territory Viking School Township Petition Quarve School Board Papers:

The other two documents concern construction of the schoolhouse. One is addressed to the School Board of Viking School Township and offers paint for the building, including “Zinc Ole,” “Coachwork” and “Premium” paint with period prices per gallon. The second is addressed to the Honorable Board of Viking School Township and provides prices for steel and wire nails and offers delivery to Viking. It is signed “Quarve.” Together the three documents form an unusual surviving record of the practical creation of a Dakota Territory rural school district, from the legal organization of the township to purchasing paint, nails and hardware for its schoolhouse. The papers came from the Quarve archive and have strong appeal for collectors of Dakota Territory, North Dakota education, one-room schoolhouse and pioneer settlement history.
- Good antique condition with expected age toning, original folds, creasing, scattered light staining and handling wear. The 1882 petition has edge wear, small tears and minor paper loss, particularly along the left edge and folds. The two schoolhouse supply documents show lighter toning and minor edge and corner wear. Handwriting remains strong and generally very readable throughout. Please see photos for exact condition.
