An incredibly rare, museum-grade piece of American cycling ephemera from the 1890s Bicycle Craze. Published by Waring & Co. (611 Washington St., Boston), this vest-pocket accordion fold-out map explicitly details the long-distance route from "Boston to Worcester." The continuous line map highlights key early bicycle routes including Newton Boulevard, Beacon Street, Brookline, and paths alongside the Charles River and the Boston & Albany Railroad line.
The inside flaps contain beautiful period advertisements catering specifically to late-Victorian "Wheelmen," showcasing the Castle Sq. Hotel, The Florence Cafe, and the Hotel Plaza on Columbus Avenue (noted as the finest bicycle avenue in Boston). The back cover features a detailed trade ad for the Reed & Curtis Machine Screw Co. of Worcester, Mass., illustrating their antique Adjustable Pedal Rubber and Pedal Balance hardware. The structural accordion folds remain crisp and fully intact.
