Measuring approximately 2.5 x 5.5 inches, this is a compact late-19th-century reference book titled Thompson’s Pocket Speller, Twentieth Edition, published by F. M. THOMPSON of Danbury, Connecticut, with copyright dates 1890–1892. Designed as a practical everyday companion, it contains over 22,800 words, along with punctuation rules, abbreviations, commercial and legal forms, tables of weights and measures, postal rates, etiquette guidance, and other daily-use reference material.
The brown leatherette cover is embossed in silver with a detailed architectural view of the Government Building from the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition, Chicago, clearly lettered “World’s Columbian Exposition 1893.” This fair-themed binding adds strong appeal for collectors of World’s Fair memorabilia and Columbian Exposition ephemera.
Ownership is firmly established by an interior stamp reading P. J. DEMPSEY, 217 South Fairfax Street, ALEXANDRIA, VA. The rear memorandum pages contain period handwritten notes and names, adding further historical interest and evidence of real-world use. Interior pages show expected age toning and light wear, with text remaining legible throughout. Binding is intact, with edge wear and softening consistent with pocket use.
A highly evocative survivor combining 1893 World’s Fair imagery, a named Alexandria, Virginia owner, and extensive late-19th-century social, commercial, and linguistic reference content.
