1895 Zion’s Co-operative Mercantile Institution (Z.C.M.I.), Logan, Utah – Wholesale Produce Price Quotation Sheet. Dated May 2, 1895, this printed commercial price circular was issued by the Logan, Utah office of Zion’s Co-operative Mercantile Institution, prominently identified as “Wholesale Produce Dealers.” The form was used to communicate current wholesale prices to merchants and other commercial buyers, with the printed warning that quotations were “subject to change without notice.”The extensive commodity list illustrates the breadth of Z.C.M.I.’s agricultural trade at the time, including eggs, creamery and ranch butter, cheese, veal, hogs, chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys, flour, wheat, oats, barley, rye, hay, potatoes, burlaps, twine and alfalfa seed. Prices and availability were entered by hand, with several commodities marked “None.” The printed solicitation at the bottom—inviting customers to request quotations on “car load lots of Grain, Flour, Hay or anything in our line”—shows that this was specifically a wholesale trade document rather than a retail price list.Zion’s Co-operative Mercantile Institution, commonly known as Z.C.M.I., had been established in Salt Lake City in 1868 under the leadership of Brigham Young and developed into one of the most important mercantile organizations in the Intermountain West. Its activities extended well beyond conventional storekeeping; this Logan sheet provides a particularly tangible example of Z.C.M.I.’s role in the regional agricultural distribution network, quoting farm products and supplies in quantities suitable for merchants and carload buyers.The date adds another historical dimension. May 1895 places the document during Utah\'s final year as a U.S. territory, only about eight months before Utah entered the Union as the 45th state on January 4, 1896. As such, the sheet is an attractive piece of late Utah Territorial commercial and agricultural ephemera, documenting both Z.C.M.I.’s wholesale operations and the everyday commodity trade of the period.
