Antique G. Elias & Bro. business letter dated February 1, 1897, on illustrated company stationery advertising hardwood, pine, and hemlock timber and lumber.
The detailed letterhead features two industrial scenes showing the company’s lumber yards, mill buildings, stacked lumber, and waterfront vessels. The general office address is printed as 955 Elk Street, Buffalo, New York.
Addressed to M. T. Jones Lbr. Co., Houston, Texas, the typed letter requests 25,000 feet of kiln-dried Calcasieu yellow pine flooring, with specifications for dimensions and quality. It also requests pricing on square timber as an alternative if the recipient cannot manufacture flooring.
Includes a purple “Received / Answered” office stamp with handwritten notations. The script closing is believed to read “G. Elias & Bro.” The writer’s identity and whether this closing was handwritten or applied by another method have not been verified. Interpretations of handwritten markings are not guaranteed.
Condition: Significant age-related wear, including overall toning, creases, fold lines, edge tears, and missing paper along the upper and lower edges. Some loss affects the large company heading. The illustrated scenes and most of the typed letter remain legible. Reverse shows text bleed-through or transfer, along with toning and folds. Please examine all photographs carefully.
