Beyond its student rosters and humor, this 1897 edition of The Tabularium holds significant Michigan historical interest through its publication committee and contributors.Published in the traditional nineteenth-century annual format, this volume chronicles the school through complete printed student rosters, literary essays, and original pen-and-ink artwork rather than individual photographic class portraits. The faculty board was guided by pioneering educator, author, and future suffragist Cornelia Steketee Hulst alongside longtime principal Prof.A.J.Volland and educator Florence Milner. The volume features original custom pen-and-ink illustrations by student artist Anna Rindge, daughter of the prominent Grand Rapids shoe manufacturing dynasty.Crucially,it serves as a late-Victorian primary source documenting the clandestine high school fraternities and secret societies of Grand Rapids Central High just a decade before they were outlawed by Michigan state legislation in 1907.
Bound in original cloth with stamped decorative titling to the front board and spine, this volume retains its original red top stain despite visible handling and age.The exterior exhibits surface rubbing, general shelf marks, light perimeter edge wear, and noticeable staining across the rear board. The text block has detached from the front casing and is hanging on to the rear board, with one loose sheet present at the back; however, the interior page signatures remain securely bound together. The leaves show light scattered smudges and handling marks consistent with turn-of-the-century paper, but remain fully legible and intact with no heavy tears. Please review all photos.
