1902 Ogden’s Guinea Gold cigarette card featuring Private Thomas Charles “Tom” Morris of the New South Wales Lancers during the Boer War.Morris was recommended for the Victoria Cross after riding back under enemy fire to rescue a wounded fellow Lancer. Contemporary reports expected the award to be confirmed, and Ogden’s identified him as “V.C.” on this card. The Victoria Cross was ultimately never awarded to Morris, making the printed V.C. designation an interesting historical feature of the card.This large-format Guinea Gold issue features a photographic portrait of Morris in uniform.
