1906 Clark's Teaberry Pepsin Gum Tin Store Display
An exceptional piece of early 20th-century country store advertising, this original lithographed tin counter display box was manufactured by The D. L. Clark Co. of Pittsburgh, PA.
Designed to hold 40 individual packages, this collectible tin features the brand's iconic "It's on the Level" spirit level graphic on the front and rear panels. The side panels show brilliant graphics of overlapping 5-cent packs sliding from a box, and the lid showcases a highly detailed, colorful illustration of a flowering teaberry plant.
A fantastic historical marker on the back lower rim explicitly notes: "Made and guaranteed by D.L. Clark Company under the Food and Drugs Act, June 30, 1906. Serial No. 3902." This dates the tin precisely to the years immediately following the passage of the landmark act, making it a stellar crossover piece for both advertising and historical ephemera collectors.
Condition Report: This tin is in highly displayable antique condition with vibrant original lithography that presents beautifully when the hinged lid is propped open. The inside lid and side panels retain excellent color depth and gloss with minimal fading. The exterior shows an honest amount of age-related wear, including minor paint loss, superficial scuffs, and edge wear. There is some minor, localized bending and wavy distortion along the overhanging lip of the red lid corners. The interior retains its original gold-flash coating but exhibits typical scattered oxidation spotting and minor darkening to the bottom surface. The metal remains completely solid with no rust-through or structural compromises, and the hinge operates smoothly.
