1906 Dickens Fellowship Programme – Lewisham Sale of Work & Social Evening
Original four-page printed programme for the Blackheath, Lee & Lewisham Branch of The Dickens Fellowship, “Sale of Work & Social Evening,” held at the Lewisham Parish Church Hall, Ladywell, on Friday, November 23, 1906 (commencing 4 o’clock). The cover presents a portrait of Charles Dickens within decorative borders; branch officers are listed, including President Major E. F. Coates, M.P., and Honorary Secretary James E. Palmer.
The interior prints the full programme of entertainment: musical performances, recitations, and dramatic sketches. Items include “Bob Sawyer’s Party” (from Pickwick Papers) recited by E. Wellebeloved; a sketch from Martin Chuzzlewit presented by Miss F. Nicholls and Miss Edith Sayers (Mrs. Gamp and Betsy Prig); piano and vocal pieces from Sullivan’s Mikado and Patience; violin solos; “Lasca”; “On the Road to Mandalay”; and a finale noted as “Skipping Rope Dance, Irish Jig, Skirt Dances, &c.” Stalls for useful and fancy articles are listed, with a Refreshment Stall, a Whist Drive at 7:30 arranged by A. J. Terry, and Dancing at 9 o’clock (M.C., Mr. Herbert J. Palmer).
The final page announces forthcoming 1906–07 branch meetings: readings and recitals; papers by J. W. T. Ley on “A Believer’s Heresies,” Willoughby Matchett on “Edwin Drood,” and Edith Sayers on “Dickens Domestics,” concluding with the Annual Conversazione on Thursday, April 18, 1907.
Founded in 1902, The Dickens Fellowship promoted the works and ideals of Charles Dickens while supporting charitable initiatives; branch events such as this combined literary programmes with community fundraising.
Condition:
Good condition with light age toning, minor handling wear, and a few small spots to the paper. Short edge wear at corners and faint staple impressions at the fold. Printing is clear and legible throughout.
