The State Journal Company of Lincoln, Nebraska was the publishing and printing arm of the influential newspaper Nebraska State Journal, one of the major Republican-leaning newspapers in the state during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.Origins and DevelopmentThe newspaper was founded in 1867, the same year Nebraska achieved statehood. It quickly became one of Lincoln’s principal newspapers and a leading voice in state politics and civic affairs. By the 1880s and 1890s the operation expanded beyond journalism into commercial printing, forming the State Journal Company, which handled lithographing, job printing, and book production in addition to publishing the daily paper.Printing and Publishing OperationsBy the early 1900s—the period of this letterhead—the company operated a large printing plant in Lincoln, equipped with modern linotype typesetting machines and high-speed presses. Besides the newspaper, the firm produced:County record books and legal formsLithographed advertising materialsGovernment and municipal printing contractsBlank books and loose-leaf record systemsBusiness stationery and commercial formsBecause county governments across Nebraska needed standardized record books for land, tax, and lot indexes, printers like the State Journal Company frequently supplied county clerks and courthouses, which matches the subject of the letter in this piece.Role in Nebraska PublishingDuring the early 20th century the State Journal Company became one of the largest printing and publishing houses in Nebraska, helping supply printed materials for both public institutions and private businesses throughout the region. The newspaper itself continued publication for well over a century, eventually merging with Lincoln’s other major daily, the Lincoln Star, in 1995 to form today’s Lincoln Journal Star.Historical ContextAt the time this 1906 letterhead was produced, the State Journal Company represented the typical multi-function newspaper printing house of the Progressive Era—simultaneously a news publisher, commercial printer, and supplier of official record books to county governments across the Midwest.
