1908 USA Philladelphia to Radnor - Gold Dust Twins - Illustr. Advert. Cover 👀:
$285.90

Add this lovely colourful commercial Americana advertising cover, a Show-Piece, to your collection or exhibit.
Front:
  • The left half of the cachet depicts the Gold Dust Twins caricature mascots marching leftward with mop, scrub brush and wash basin in hands posted behind a yellow-gold box of Fairbank\'s Gold Dust Washing Powder. The left twin is wearing an upside-down kettle on her head and wears a red skirt, the other twin wears a light blue skirt, written thereupon both skirts is the product name: Gold Dust.Above the graphic reads the instruction: \"Return in 5 days to\", and below it reads in all caps: The Gold Dust Twins. Bourse Building, Philadelphia, Pa.
  • On the right half of the cachet we find the machine duplex cancel featuring a single ring in which the city and state occupy the top and the year 1908 on the bottom. Indicia in center shows SEP 9 and 6:30 PM. Wavy cancel featuring 4 and D within obliterate the 2c George Washington stamp #319

  • The recipient appears to be, (handwritten): Mr C.H. Murray, Radnor, PA
A bit of trivia on the recipient: In the context of postal ephemera from around 1908, Dr. Charles Henry Murray\'s name is intimately linked to specialized mail correspondence sent to or from Radnor, PA.He is best known for writing and publishing Practice of Osteopathy: Its Practical Application to the Various Diseases of the Human Body. First published around this exact era (with early editions spanning 1908 to 1912), the book became a foundational manual. He explicitly designed his work to help standard medical doctors (MDs) integrate osteopathic adjustments, physical manipulation, and holistic examinations into their traditional practices to better care for patients.
Reverse:
  • a partial Radnor receiver single ring cancel is partially discernible. Indicia legibly shows Sep 10 1903 AM and the accompanying grid cancel to its right. Pencil markings evident. The left side is where the cover was slit open. There also appears to be adhesive tape residue.
Cross-Collectible Appeal: This item appeals heavily to three separate markets: classic US advertising cover collectors, buyers of Black Americana and social history items, and local Philadelphia history enthusiasts.
This era sits at the perfect crossroads of postal mechanization, shifting geopolitical borders, and the peak of commercial advertising through the mail. This cover hasn\'t seen the light of day in several decades as it has been locked away in a prominent furniture tycoon\'s collection and was part of an estate sale in Canada.
