Designed by noted sculptor and medalist Emil Fuchs for the American Numismatic Society and Hudson-Fulton Celebration Commission.
One side depicts Henry Hudson aboard the Halve Maen (Half Moon) with the inscription:
“Discovery of Hudson River by Henry Hudson A.D. MDCIX”
The reverse features a portrait of Robert Fulton, 1765–1815, allegorical figures representing navigation, history and commerce, and the inscription:
“First Use of Steam in Navigation on the Hudson River 1807”
The medal retains its decorative suspension loop, although the original ribbon is not present.
The exact metallic composition is unverified. Its appearance and the exposed base metal along a rim nick suggest that it may be one of the silver-plated souvenir versions, rather than solid sterling silver.
