Original 1910–1911 New Jersey Complaint Docket / Justice of the Peace Court LedgerFascinating original early 20th-century New Jersey legal and criminal-history docket, containing extensive handwritten court records dating from 1910 through September 28, 1911.The bound volume contains pre-printed “COMPLAINT DOCKET” forms completed in period handwriting. Approximately half of the book is filled with original court entries, with the remaining portion unused.Entries record names and addresses of complainants, defendants and witnesses, the nature of criminal complaints, warrants and arrests, bail/bondsmen, jail commitments, court costs and other proceedings before a Justice of the Peace.The docket includes cases from Perth Amboy, Keasbey, Woodbridge and surrounding New Jersey communities.The surviving entries offer a fascinating glimpse into everyday criminal justice in New Jersey more than 115 years ago. Examples visible in the volume include:• A June 27, 1910 assault complaint alleging that a defendant assaulted a man and stabbed him twice with a knife.• An August 26, 1910 “felonious assault” complaint alleging that a defendant struck another man on the head with a stone. The record documents his arrest, jail commitment and subsequent $100 bail.• A December 30, 1910 disorderly-person complaint involving allegations of indecent statements, defamation and threats. The docket records a fine and commitment to jail.• A September 28, 1911 “atrocious assault” complaint alleging that a defendant assaulted a woman with an axe while threatening to kill her. The entry records $150 bail.The final completed entry located in the volume is dated September 28, 1911.Beyond its legal-history interest, the numerous handwritten names, addresses and locations may also make the volume useful to collectors and researchers interested in New Jersey genealogy and local history.CONDITION: This is an authentic working court ledger more than a century old and is in poor/fair antique condition. The front cover is almost completely detached from the binding, and the spine/binding has substantial wear, deterioration and losses. Covers and edges show heavy wear. Interior pages have age toning, staining, handling wear and other signs of age and use. Approximately half of the volume contains handwritten entries. No restoration has been attempted. Please examine all photographs carefully; they are an important part of the condition description.
