Spectacular original antique gelatin silver glass plate camera negative taken on May 27, 1916, by Boston Herald-Traveler staff photographer Leslie Jones, capturing the marching contingent of the Sargent School for Physical Education in the historic Boston Citizens\' Preparedness Parade.
Preserved directly within the historic press morgue of the Boston Herald-Traveler, this remarkable field exposure captures the immense national mobilization preceding America\'s formal entry into World War I. Over 40,000 marchers took to the streets of Boston on May 27, 1916, in one of the largest civic demonstrations in New England history.

The Sargent School Marchers: Founded in Cambridge by Dr. Dudley Allen Sargent, the Sargent School was America\'s premier pioneering institution for women\'s physical education and athletic training (later incorporated into Boston University). Dozens of female students march in disciplined military rank-and-file formation wearing crisp white sailor middy dresses, dark neckerchief ties, and matching brimmed hats.
The Color Guard: The formation is led by a three-woman color guard proudly carrying a massive, billowing 48-star American flag, flanked by a uniformed military officer in a campaign service hat.
The Sargent Banner: Carried high in the center of the column is the school’s formal processional standard reading: \"SARGENT SCHOOL FOR PHYSICAL EDUCATION\".

Condition:
Very Good antique condition. The heavy glass plate is structurally sound, flat, and complete with no breaks or hairline cracks through the glass body. The gelatin silver emulsion is exceptionally sharp, clean, and dense, rendering crisp details across the hundreds of faces, uniform folds, and background commercial signage. Displays honest, expected period newsroom handling wear, including minor edge frilling and slight emulsion wear along the outer glass rebate margins well clear of the central marching formation. Accompanied by the original 1916 newsroom sleeve.
