1919 WWI Salvation Army Lassie Mending Pershing Troops Military Postcard For Sale

Offered here is an original 1919 Salvation Army World War I fundraising postcard depicting one of the celebrated Salvation Army “Lassies” mending the clothing of American soldiers serving with General John J. Pershing’s forces.

The printed caption on the front reads:

“Lassie mending buddies clothes
Front Line with Gen. Pershing’s
Troops”

The photograph shows a Salvation Army woman seated at a treadle sewing machine in a rough stone building near the front. Several American servicemen stand and sit nearby while she repairs their uniforms or other clothing. Her Salvation Army hat and uniform insignia are clearly visible.

The Salvation Army sent women workers to France during World War I to provide practical and spiritual support to members of the American Expeditionary Forces. Popularly known as “Salvation Army Lassies,” these women became especially famous for making doughnuts for soldiers. Their work, however, extended well beyond food service. They operated huts and canteens, wrote letters, distributed supplies, offered religious and emotional support, and performed ordinary but essential tasks such as sewing on buttons and repairing damaged uniforms.

This card documents that less frequently depicted aspect of their service. The informal setting, treadle sewing machine, heavily worn stone walls, and group of waiting soldiers create a particularly evocative image of daily life behind the front lines.

The reverse identifies the card as a Salvation Army fundraising issue and contains the printed appeal:

“Send contributions for Salvation Army Home Service Fund to nearest Salvation Army Headquarters.”

The Salvation Army launched its nationwide Home Service Fund campaign in May 1919, shortly after the conclusion of World War I, to finance and continue its charitable work in the United States. The printed fundraising appeal therefore allows this postcard to be dated confidently to 1919.

The postcard is unused and has no address, written message, postage stamp, or postal cancellation. There are penciled collector or inventory notations on the address side.

This is a mechanically printed photographic postcard rather than a real-photo postcard. The image nevertheless offers excellent historical content and strong crossover appeal for collectors of World War I memorabilia, women’s wartime service, the American Expeditionary Forces, General Pershing, the Salvation Army, military uniforms, early sewing machines, Christian charitable organizations, and American home-front fundraising.

The card has survived with moderate age-related wear, including rounded and worn corners, edge wear, toning, scattered staining and soiling, surface rubbing, and small bends or creases near the corners. The reverse displays additional discoloration and handling marks. Despite these imperfections, the principal image, Salvation Army insignia, soldiers, sewing machine, printed caption, and fundraising message remain clearly visible.
