1920 Woodward and Lothrop Diary Washington DC Department Store Antique Book VTG:

Description

Today for sale we have a 1920 Woodward & Lothrop Universal Diary, issued by the famous Washington, D.C. department store and arranged and compiled expressly for Woodward & Lothrop by Joseph Kleckner, Publisher, of the Harrison Building in Philadelphia. The binding is red cloth over boards with the store name, the word Diary, and the year 1920 stamped in black within a ruled border. Every page carries the Woodward & Lothrop running head, making this a strong piece of advertising and store history from a department store that anchored downtown Washington for more than a century.

The printed contents follow the listing at the front and include the 1920 calendar, address and telephone pages, daily diary pages running from 6 to 188, daily expenses, a daily cash account, a miscellaneous information section from 213 to 220, a personal record page, a family record page, and calendars for 1919 and 1921 inside the back cover. The miscellaneous section is a period reference in miniature, with several pages of United States city populations giving both the 1910 census figures and 1917 estimates for cities across the country, along with legal holidays by state and first aid instructions.

What lifts this above a blank diary is the period use. The address and telephone pages are filled in a fine fountain pen hand with roughly twenty entries, keyed by city in the left margin to Washington, Philadelphia, Chester, and New Jersey, listing names including Ruth Conroy, Jessie Gibbs, Katherine Wakefield, Genevieve Pyle at the Darlington Seminary, Margaret Forsythe at the Iroquois, Esther Harvey on Ludlow, Florence Rogers, Maude Brown of Haworth, New Jersey, Elaine Lynch, Beatrice Lynch, Marie Judge, Maude Featherstone on North Fairhill Street, Mary Fahnestock, Harriet Parker, Gerry Lewis, and others, with old style telephone exchanges such as Columbia, Hobart, Baring, Woodland, Race, Wyoming, and Dickinson.

The Personal Record page is completed in the same hand and dated January 1, 1920. The owner gives his name as Horace James Donnelly Jr., address Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., birthday November 11, school telephone Baring 8485, home telephone North 3280, weight 139 pounds recorded December 25, 1919, height five feet nine inches, glove size seven and three quarters, collar fourteen and a half, hat seven, shoes eight, hosiery eleven, bank book number 1296, and his doctor listed as Dr. Brumbaugh. A small and personal snapshot of a young man moving between Philadelphia and wartime era Washington.

Condition should be understood before offerding. The daily diary pages for February through December are complete and unused, offering clean blank dated pages throughout. Some pages elsewhere in the volume are missing, and the sections that were used show wear at the gutter with loose stitching and a cracked hinge visible at the address pages. The cloth covers are rubbed at the corners and edges with scuffing to the black stamping. The paper is toned with scattered spots and a few small ink marks. Sold as a genuine antique in used condition.

A nice crossover piece for collectors of Woodward & Lothrop and Washington, D.C. department store history, early twentieth century diaries and ephemera, telephone exchange and social history research, or Philadelphia genealogy. Please study all photos closely, as they form part of the description and show the true condition.
