1923 Armour\'s Dry Sausage Promo Calendar Ad Card Meat Economy:
$13.99

This small, rectangular promotional calendar card from Armour and Company, dated to 1923, is a classic example of early twentieth-century advertising ephemera designed for practical, year-long utility. The recto features a complete full-year calendar, with the months January through June arranged in a column on the left and July through December on the right. Sundays are printed in red ink, a standard typographic convention of the period intended to aid visual scanning. Above the calendar, the company’s oval logo encloses the words “Armour’s QUALITY PRODUCTS,” while a large, flowing script announces “Armour’s,” followed by the bold red serif text “DRY SAUSAGE.” Running vertically along the left margin is a promotional entreaty: “ASK YOUR DEALER FOR THESE POPULAR AMERICAN VARIETIES,” beneath which are listed specific product lines including Star Mettwurst, Thuringer Summer Sausage, Gothaer Gold Band Sausage, Star Summer Sausage, and Star B. C. Salami. The verso of the card presents a chromolithographed still life of sliced and whole sausages arranged on a cutting board, garnished with parsley and carved vegetables, all set against a deep blue background. A knife rests beside the display, and the circular blue-and-yellow labels on the whole sausages read “Armour’s STAR SUMMER SAUSAGE.” At the bottom of this illustrated side, the slogan “A Meat Economy Slice and Serve” appears in a serif typeface, reinforcing the product’s convenience and value proposition.Armour and Company, headquartered in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, was one of the “Big Four” American meatpacking firms during the early twentieth century, and this calendar card reflects the company’s sophisticated marketing strategies aimed at the domestic consumer. The listing of German-style sausage varieties such as Mettwurst, Thuringer, and Gothaer reveals the culinary influence of immigrant populations in the United States, while the term “American Varieties” signals an effort to nationalize and mainstream these products. The card shows typical age-related toning and slightly rounded corners, but the printed text and illustrations remain clear and legible, with no significant tears or stains. Such items document the intersection of commercial printing, household utility, and the rise of branded consumer goods in the post-World War I era, offering a tangible glimpse into the everyday material culture of 1920s America.
