1926 First Lady Grace Coolidge Autograph Letter Signed, White House Card &
Original 1926 autograph letter signed by First Lady Grace Coolidge, written entirely in her hand on an official White House correspondence card and accompanied by its original White House envelope.
The card is headed with the gilt Presidential eagle above THE WHITE HOUSE / WASHINGTON and is addressed personally: “Dear Carlotta:”
Grace Coolidge thanks the recipient for flowers that had been brought to the train for her the previous day, as well as for a photograph apparently taken at an earlier reunion.
The letter reads: “Dear Carlotta: Thank you for the lovely flowers which you brought to the train for me yesterday, and for the picture. I think that must have been taken the year of the re-union for I see we all have on badges. It was a pleasure to see you and your mother. With my love, Sincerely, Grace Coolidge. Tuesday.”
The accompanying original envelope is likewise headed “The White House, Washington” and is addressed in Grace Coolidge's hand to Miss Carlotta Walker, 97 Center Street, Rutland, Vermont.
The envelope bears a Paul Smiths, New York, August 10, 1926 postmark and retains its original two-cent United States postage stamp.
During the summer of 1926, President Calvin Coolidge and First Lady Grace Coolidge resided at White Pine Camp near Paul Smiths, New York, which served as the presidential Summer White House. Official Coolidge records document presidential activity at White Pine Camp on August 10, 1926, the date of the postmark.
The recipient, Carlotta Walker of Rutland, Vermont, is independently documented at 97 Center Street, matching the address written on the envelope. Period Rutland records also place her mother at the same address, providing context for Grace Coolidge's reference to having seen “you and your mother.” The Rutland Historical Society also preserves a Carlotta Walker photograph album within its collections.
The content indicates a personal acquaintance rather than a routine autograph response. Grace Coolidge refers to Carlotta bringing flowers to her at the train, discusses a shared reunion photograph, and closes with “With my love.”
The letter and matching envelope document correspondence by Grace Coolidge during the Coolidges' 1926 Summer White House at Paul Smiths.
