1928 Nova Scotia Camp Life Night Campfire Tent Glass Negatives & Positive OOAK
Original, one-of-a-kind (OOAK) archival set of three (3) large-format gelatin silver glass plates captured in October 1928: an extraordinary document of early wilderness flash photography and backwoods sporting life in Nova Scotia, Canada.
This complete darkroom set includes two (2) sequential camera-original field glass negatives and one (1) contemporary vintage glass positive transparency (contact lantern plate), documenting hunters cooking over an open campfire outside their canvas wall tent at night.
Accompanied by the original vintage tan kraft darkroom morgue filing sleeve with contemporary newsroom documentation:
The Sleeve Inscription:
Name: Camp life at Night
Order: Nova Scotia
Remarks: Oct 1928
Physical & Technical Breakdown of the Lot:
Plate 1 — Camera-Original Glass Negative: Primary in-camera dry plate exposure. The campfire and dense smoke plume are recorded as opaque black silver (dense highlight exposure), while the nocturnal forest shadows remain clear glass.
Plate 2 — Camera-Original Glass Negative: Sequential second in-camera exposure taken moments after Plate 1, showing natural shifts in the rising smoke and camper positioning.
Plate 3 — Vintage Glass Positive Transparency: Contemporary period contact glass positive made directly from the field negative in the darkroom. Because this plate is already a finished positive, the campfire flames and billowing smoke appear as luminous white light against a rich, dark silver forest background, viewable directly without digital inversion.
Historical & Visual Analysis:
In the late 1920s, sportsmen and photojournalists traveled deep into the Canadian Maritimes for autumn moose hunting and wilderness expeditions. Nighttime woodland photography required open magnesium flare or flash powder charges to expose large dry plates in total darkness.
Visual details preserved across the silver gelatin emulsions:
The Campers & Hearth: Woodsmen in wool caps and mackinaws tending the fire, frying food in a long-handled skillet while kettles hang from rustic wooden spit poles over the coals.
Wilderness Encampment: Pitched canvas A-frame wall tent, trimmed timber ridge poles, bark lean-to supports, and an extended overhead dining tarp.
Forest Canopy & Flash Atmosphere: Bright magnesium illumination freezing thick plumes of woodsmoke climbing into the surrounding spruce, fir, and birch trees.
Tonal Fidelity: Deep shadow separation in the night woods balanced against the high-key flash exposure on the tent canvas, log bark, and ground litter.
Specifications:
