1929 Boston Walker Electric Coal Truck Sinkhole Street Crash Glass Negative OOAK

Original, one-of-a-kind (OOAK) camera-original antique gelatin silver glass negative captured in 1929: an extraordinary piece of early American commercial vehicle history and urban disaster photojournalism: a massive Walker Electric commercial coal truck, laden with tons of fuel, collapsed into a flooded street cave-in on Stuart Street in Boston, Massachusetts, sending its front wheels tilting high into the air.

Accompanied by its original vintage tan kraft darkroom morgue filing sleeve bearing contemporary newsroom documentation:

  • The Sleeve Inscription:

    Morgue Jacket: Name: Truck Wreck

Archive Card: Coal Truck caves in on Stuart St. Boston - 1929

Historical & Contextual Significance:

Manufactured by the Walker Vehicle Company of Chicago, Walker Electric trucks were among the most prominent heavy-duty commercial battery-electric haulers of the 1910s and 1920s, renowned for their patented balanced-drive reduction gearing built directly into the rear axle. Heavily utilized by urban coal companies for city deliveries, their combined battery and payload weight exerted immense pressure on municipal pavement. This dramatic field press exposure captures the immediate aftermath on Stuart Street when the street bed gave way under fleet Truck No. 9, swallowing the rear drive assembly and catapulting the front chassis upward amid flooded water main runoff and scattered lumps of coal.

Visual details preserved in the silver gelatin emulsion:

  • The Suspended Walker Electric Truck: Shows the heavy dump bed filled to the brim with coal, tilted backward into the roadway breach, with the front left wooden artillery wheel suspended feet above the wet street. The cab features an open-seat canvas buggy top, dual circular electric lamps, front nameplate reading "WALKER", fleet number "9", and commercial plate "B454".

  • The Street Scene: Two men in suits, a fedora, and a flat cap stand ankle-deep in the water-slicked pavement beside the submerged rear tires, while a crowd of pedestrians in 1920s overcoats and straw hats lines the distant sidewalk.

  • Period Urban Signage: Directly behind the wreck stands a large commercial roof billboard advertising the "General Electric Refrigerator CLUB - Zero Park St.".

  • Tonal Fidelity: Rich continuous-tone silver gelatin gradation rendering reflections in the standing street water, spilled coal chunks, vehicle ironwork, and multistory brick downtown data-path-to-node="18">

  • Format: Heavy antique silver gelatin press glass negative, exposed directly in-camera in 1929.

  • Archive Ephemera: Accompanied by the original period tan kraft darkroom morgue filing envelope and inner archival slip.

Please Note: This listing is for the original antique glass negative and its period paper archive sleeve only. Any positive photographic images shown in this listing are modern inverted digital scans provided solely as a visual representation to show what finished photographs print like. No physical paper photograph, modern print, or paper product of any kind is included with this purchase.

Condition:

Very Good to Excellent antique condition. The heavy glass plate is structurally sound, stable, and completely intact with no cracks, fractures, breaks, or chips through the glass body. The silver gelatin emulsion is clean, sharp, and firmly adhered across the composition, preserving pinpoint optical resolution on the truck mechanics, lettering, wet street textures, and background billboard. Authentic unexposed handling borders remain preserved along the outer plate margins outside the primary image plane. Accompanied by the original period kraft morgue filing sleeve.

The glass plate negative measures 4 x 5In.
