This early British tobacco card presents a wonderfully characteristic black-and-white profile portrait of Durante during the formative years of his motion-picture career. The front identifies him as an MGM player, while the decorative reverse states that it is one of a series of 50 photographs packed with cigarettes.
Issued in 1932, the card dates from a particularly important year in Durante’s career, when his screen appearances included Speak Easily, The Wet Parade, Blondie of the Follies and The Phantom President. His unmistakable profile makes this one of the most visually distinctive subjects in the Cinema Artistes series.
PSA’s current population report records only four graded examples of Jimmy Durante #23: one each in PSA 4, PSA 5, PSA 6 and PSA 7. This PSA 5 is therefore a population-one example at its grade, with only two graded higher. Population figures are subject to change.
An appealing early card for collectors of Jimmy Durante, Golden Age Hollywood, British tobacco cards and vintage non-sport issues.
