1934 Vintage Press Photo by INTERNATIONAL NEWS.One of several exclusive photographs obtained by International News Photos of the Byrd Antarctic Expedition following the severe winter through which the expedition members passed.
This picture shows the Curtiss Condor (one of the two planes which formed the aerial survey portion of the expedition) landing near the mothership, the "Jacob Ruppert", after a flight from the "Little America" base of the party.
The Ruppert carries the major portion of supplies, while others are in the Little America camp far below the Antarctic Circle. Admiral Byrd himself advanced 122 miles south of Little America for further polar explorations.
