Today for sale we have a framed original 1935 John Morrell and Company advertising calendar for Morrell’s Pride and Snow Cap Lard. The calendar comes from the 1935 Morrell Encore Series, a run of song themed images selected by the famed operatic contralto Madame Schumann Heink. This edition centers on the old song School Days, and the color art shows a boy in suspenders and a girl in blue walking a country lane past a white picket fence toward a schoolhouse, with the School Days verse printed on an oval below. The September 1935 grid sits under the art, flanked by the August and October mini calendars, with holiday and moon phase vignettes across the dates. The bottom panel carries the Morrell’s Pride and Snow Cap Lard graphic showing the leaf lard cartons and kettle rendered lard pails, along with the John Morrell and Company line, general offices Ottumwa Iowa, provisioners since 1827, and packing plants at Ottumwa Iowa, Sioux Falls South Dakota, and Topeka Kansas.
The piece sits in a brown wood frame under glass. A Michaels framer label on the back marks the framing as a later addition and not original to the calendar. Measures 31 by 15 inches framed.
