Overview:Original newsroom glass plate negative taken by Leslie Jones for the Boston Herald-Traveler, capturing the German dirigible LZ 129 Hindenburg low over the landing field at Lakehurst, New Jersey. The hull clearly displays the D-LZ129 registration, "Hindenburg" Gothic script, tail insignia, and the 1936 Berlin Olympic rings emblem, dating this image specifically to the 1936 season prior to the 1937 disaster.
This negative captures the LZ 129 Hindenburg at Lakehurst, New Jersey, during its triumphant 1936 inaugural flight season—distinguished specifically by the 1936 Berlin Olympic Rings painted on the forward hull, an emblem it carried only that year. Less than a year later, this exact airship would be destroyed over this very field in the catastrophic May 6, 1937 explosion, making this one of the final surviving newsroom glass plate documents of the world's largest commercial airship at the peak of its transatlantic service prior to the disaster.
Includes the original period paper filing sleeve with period notations: "Graf Zep before she blew up in N.J." and "Hindenburg".
Condition:The glass is intact with no cracks across the image area. Chipping and loss along the bottom glass edge and lower left margin as shown in photos; the airship, field, and primary composition are completely unaffected. Good silver density throughout.
The glass plate negative measures 4 x 5In.
