New tools to keep Britain's coal production rising. Attainment of Britain's 1947 coal target of 200,000,000 long tons is now within sight, for better tools and longer hours have resulted in rising coal production. Several times output has soared over the weekly target of 4,000,000 long tons. Second only to the British mines call for men is the miners' call for steel-to build the equipment which will result in a maximum tonnage of coal at the surface. It is on the way. 100 mechanization projects introduced this year have resulted in an increase of 60 percent in output per manshift in pits where they have been installed. In the first half of 1947, 1,000 mechanical conveyors, 470 coal-cutters, 81 diesel locomotives and four million feet of conveyor belting were sent to the pits, and further orders totalling more than 9,500,000 pounds ($38,000,000) have been placed for delivery before the end of the year. Britain plans to spend in all 150,000,000 pounds ($600,000,000) on boosting coal production. Pictures show: Left: diesel locomotives for main haulage ways come off assembly line. Their exhaust systems are made flameproof and harmful fumes are not released into the pit. Right: New mine locomotive is tried out on test track. The locos have to work over heavy gradients in the pits. Photo measures 10 x 8.25 inches. Photo is dated 11-23-1947. PHOTO FRONT
