Original Vintage 1950s Jacques French Restaurant Menu 900 North Michigan Avenue Chicago Illinois
Jacques was founded by Jacques Fumagalli, who had cooked at the Ritz in Paris and the Sevilla-Biltmore in Havana; he opened the restaurant at 180 East Delaware in 1928 and relocated it to 900 North Michigan Avenue on June 1, 1935. It was a landmark French restaurant in an old-fashioned Michigan Avenue building, with three dining rooms, a modernistic cocktail lounge, a glass-roofed continental dining room, and a celebrated summer terrace in the inner courtyard, serving classic French fare and remaining extremely popular through the 1960s. Fumagalli sold the restaurant to Ray Castro and Edison Dick in 1953-54, after which it drifted from authentically French toward \'continental\'; he retired to Florida in 1953 and died there in 1969. A offer for landmark status failed, and the 900 N. Michigan building was demolished in 1984.
