Original vintage employee identification badge for Milton Ash of the System Development Corporation (SDC), 2500 Colorado Avenue, Santa Monica, California. Laminated badge has Ash’s photographic portrait, typed name, employee number 2446, security authorization/signature area, metal fastener, and the early SDC logo on the reverse.
SDC was one of the important early American computer and systems-engineering organizations, emerging from RAND’s work on the SAGE air-defense computer system during the 1950s. The RAND System Development Division became the independent System Development Corporation in 1956 and was heavily involved in early large-scale computer programming, military command-and-control systems, and operations research.
More importantly, Milton Ash can be directly documented as an SDC researcher. In 1959 he published work on mathematical target-assignment models in Operations Research, and in 1960 published “Diffusion Attrition Model,” dealing with mathematical modeling of interceptor attacks against target formations. He also co-authored a 1959 nuclear-reactor paper with noted RAND mathematicians Richard Bellman and Robert Kalaba. This makes the badge a particularly nice surviving piece of early Cold War computing, operations research, and defense technology history rather than simply an anonymous company ID.
