1951 CUBAN BASEBALL PRESS PHOTO : MARIO DIAZ TEACHES PEDRITO SAN ROMÁN TO CATCH:
$48.00

This charming black-and-white press photograph, dated January 28, 1951, captures a tender and spirited moment between a professional baseball player and a young boy on a baseball field, likely in Cuba given the Spanish-language text and "Todo Nylon" sign in the background—a well-known Cuban advertising landmark of the era. The adult, dressed in a crisp baseball uniform bearing the letter “M” on his chest (possibly representing “Marianao” of the Cuban League), crouches beside the young boy, who is fully outfitted in catcher's gear. The player's cap is tilted slightly back, and he wears a warm, encouraging smile, suggesting a teaching moment or playful interaction. His demeanor is that of a coach or mentor. The young boy, identified on the reverse news clipping was Pedrito San Román, is clearly taking his role seriously. Clad in an oversized catcher's chest protector, shin guards, mitt, and mask (which he's adjusting), his expression is focused and intense, almost as if he knows the importance of this moment. The gear looks just slightly too big for his small frame, adding a touch of endearing humor to the scene. This image is emblematic of the passion for baseball that transcends generations in Cuba, symbolizing mentorship, aspiration, and the joy of the game. The newsclipping was translated and it reports "This boy, Pedrito San Román, surely saw Mario Díaz and Gilberto Valdivia receiving loud applause during the championship, and he’s thinking that he also has the size—at least in stature—to do the same. Mario Díaz himself is teaching him the first secrets of catching, where he is shining so much in the current tournament." This caption confirms that the adult in the photo is Mario Díaz, a catcher, and that he is mentoring young Pedrito San Román. There is also an inscription on the reverse of the press photo. The handwriting is partly obscured, but the visible script roughly echoes the printed text, noting that Mario Díaz is teaching Pedrito the tricks of the trade behind the plate. Preliminary research reveals that Mario Diaz hit .250 for the Cuban National team that won the bronze medal in the 1946 Central American and Caribbean tournament. He also played in the 1951 Pan American Games. This vintage press photo is in very good condition (see scans).
