1952 Holt\'s Piston Seal Worn Cylinder Compensator Schuck\'s Seattle Receipt
An unusually complete piece of early postwar automotive history: a Holt\'s Piston Seal Worn Cylinder Compensator in its original illustrated box, with the original tube, applicator, printed installation instructions, supplementary instructions, and a 1952 Schuck Auto Supply sales receipt from Seattle.
Holt\'s Piston Seal was made by Douglas Holt Ltd. of London, England and marketed as a treatment for worn engines with excessive piston-to-cylinder clearance. Rather than rebuilding or reboring the engine, the compound was applied through the spark-plug openings and was advertised as reducing oil consumption and improving compression. Contemporary British motoring literature documents Holt\'s Piston Seal by 1950 as a treatment aimed specifically at motorists unable to afford a rebore.
The packaging is particularly graphic, with period piston artwork, an \"eating oil?\" illustration, and a wonderful panel advertising Douglas Holt\'s other motoring products. This is the Standard Size, marked for cars up to 35 H.P. The tube remains present and appears substantially intact, along with its corrugated packing and black rubber applicator/extension.
Adding considerable Seattle interest is the original Schuck Auto Supply receipt, apparently dated May 17, 1952. The receipt advertises five Seattle locations, including First & Columbia, 5220 15th N.W., 7th & Bell, 1022 1st Ave. So., and 4716 California Ave., along with the slogan \"Others Don\'t Amount to Schuck\'s.\" Schuck\'s began in Seattle in 1917 and eventually grew into one of the Northwest\'s best-known auto-parts chains.
The large original box measures approximately 9\" long. The Piston Seal tube is approximately 6\" long excluding the threaded nozzle.
