Noteworthy People:
John L. Lewis (B.A., Economics, 1953): A prominent Cleveland attorney and civic leader who served as president of the Cleveland Bar Association in the 1970s. He specialized in corporate law, advising on mergers during Ohio’s manufacturing boom, and was active in alumni governance, chairing WRU’s post-merger transition committee. His obituary in the Plain Dealer (2005) highlighted his role in desegregating local bar events.
• William B. Richardson (B.A., Political Science, 1953): Longtime Ohio state legislator (served 1967–1993 in the House and Senate), known for sponsoring education reform bills and environmental protections for Lake Erie. A moderate Democrat, he was instrumental in the 1970s creation of the Ohio EPA. Post-retirement, he taught political science at CWRU as an adjunct.
• James H. Hilton (B.S., Business, 1953): Successful entrepreneur who founded Hilton Packaging Corp. in 1958, growing it into a major Midwest supplier of industrial materials (sold to a Fortune 500 firm in 1995). He endowed a CWRU scholarship for business students and was inducted into the university’s Alumni Association Hall of Fame in 2003 for philanthropy.
