Original 1959-60 snapshot photograph of Grauman\'s Chinese Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard during the theatrical run of Stanley Kramer\'s On the Beach.
An excellent period Hollywood theater image with the famous Chinese Theatre façade, dragon marquee and film billing clearly visible — including Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner, Fred Astaire and Anthony Perkins.
The marquee reads “ON THE BEACH” and shows the film\'s principal stars. On the Beach premiered at Grauman\'s Chinese Theatre in December 1959 and remained there into March 1960, allowing this photograph to be dated unusually closely to that theatrical run.
The snapshot captures the exterior before later alterations to the theatre, including the dramatic vertical towers and elaborate Chinese-style marquee decoration. Several people stand near the entrance, with period automobiles and a “THEATRE PARKING” sign visible farther down the street.
Unlike the many commercially produced postcards of Grauman\'s Chinese Theatre, this is an original vernacular snapshot, offering a visitor\'s street-level view of the landmark while a specifically identifiable film was playing.
