Air Force Cold War USAF 6th OMS Walker AFB Enamel Donald Duck Vulcan Lighter
For sale is a spectacular piece of military and tobacciana history. This vintage 1960s Vulcan brand fluid lighter features a beautiful, vibrant enamel emblem on the front depicting Disney's Donald Duck marching with maintenance wrenches in a snowy environment.Disney originally designed this cartoon during World War II specifically for the 6th Organizational Maintenance Squadron (6th OMS) to act as their official unit mascot.
The reverse side is engraved:"6 OMSWALKER AFB NEW MEXICO"
Some Historical Cold War Context for Collectors
-During the early 1960s, Walker AFB was transformed into the largest base under the Strategic Air Command (SAC), serving as a primary nuclear deterrent line against the Soviet Union
-The 6th Organizational Maintenance Squadron (6th OMS) mechanics at Walker were directly responsible for launching and maintaining the giant B-52 Stratofortress heavy jet bombers that were kept on 24-hour "ground alert" status
-During the height of the Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962, the 6th Wing at Walker AFB went on maximum alert. Mechanics and airmen worked around the clock on the flight lines preparing bombers and refueling tankers for rapid response.
