This historical memorabilia is a highly collectible 1962 President and Mrs. Kennedy Official White House Christmas card. For their second official card, the Kennedy's chose a personal photograph of Mrs. Kennedy and the children taking a sleigh ride pulled by Caroline's pony, Macaroni, on the South Lawn of the White House. Personal photographer, Cecil Stoughton captured the scene after an unusual Washington snowfall.
The 1962 White House card was produced by Hallmark Cards with various messages. According to author Mary Seeley, in her book, "Seasons's Greetings from the White House", 1000 "Christmas Greetings and Best Wishes for a Happy New Year" were printed with a facsimile signature; 700 with the same greeting were produced without a printed signature allowing the Kennedy's to personally hand sign cards to family, friends and members of Congress. This Kennedy Collectible features a secretarial John F. Kennedy signature in black ink; First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy (later Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis) signed in light blue ink.
The Christmas card includes the original transmittal envelope with typed name of the Honorable Corinne Boyd Riley, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from South Carolina. Riley was elected as a Democrat to the 87th Congress, by special election to fill the vacancy caused by the death of her husband, US Rep John Jacob Riley.
This artifact captures a moment in political history and is a unique piece of American memorabilia from the Kennedy Administration, making it a valuable collector's item for enthusiasts and collectors of President John F. Kennedy and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy.
