Both structures were powerful symbols of the German Democratic Republic’s ambitious redevelopment of central East Berlin. The Fernsehturm opened in 1969, while the 41-story Hotel Stadt Berlin opened in October 1970 as one of the most prestigious properties in the state-owned Interhotel chain.
The hotel was designed by architects Roland Korn, Heinz Scharlipp and Hans-Erich Bogatzky. After German reunification, it became the Forum Hotel and was later renamed the Park Inn by Radisson Berlin Alexanderplatz. The building still dominates the square, although its original façade has been replaced with reflective glass.
The reverse identifies the scene in German, Russian, English and French as:
“Berlin – Hauptstadt der DDR / Interhotel ‘Stadt Berlin’”
The card was published by the state-owned VEB Foto-Verlag in Erlbach im Vogtland. Its K 1/73 production code indicates a 1973 printing. This unused card is an evocative artifact of East German tourism, architecture, propaganda and urban life.
Condition:
Unused and unposted vintage postcard with no writing, postage or postal markings. It has corner and edge wear, light surface marks, mild age toning and a noticeable bend or crease at the upper-right corner. The photograph remains sharp and visually impressive.
