Vintage Soviet wildlife postcard featuring the Pallas’s cat (Manul), a rare and fascinating wild cat of Central Asia and Siberia.
The artwork depicts the distinctive fluffy Pallas’s cat with its round face, short legs, thick fur and striped tail in its natural rocky mountain habitat.
The reverse contains a detailed Russian-language zoological text about the Pallas’s cat. It describes the Manul as one of the smallest wild cats of the USSR, with relatively short legs, a stocky body and a thick, bushy tail. In winter it develops especially long and dense fur.
The text explains that the species inhabits the Caucasus, Central Asia and southern Siberia, living in desert mountains and highland steppes, among rocks and stone outcrops. It also notes that the Pallas’s cat mainly hunts rodents and that hunting for its beautiful silky fur had made this rare animal threatened with extinction.
