Item Description:
For sale is an exceptional historical archive consisting of 30 original World War II handwritten and typed letters homefront correspondence. All letters were written by soldier Dan Speakman while stationed with the Army Specialized Training Unit (ASTU / ASTP) at South Dakota State College in Brookings, South Dakota, spanning the summer of 1943.
Unlike typical military training correspondence, this archive contains remarkable, historically significant primary-source commentary on major events of 1943. Most notably, one compelling letter discusses the historic Los Angeles Zoot Suit Riots (“the fights between them and the zoot-suiters”) and the Detroit Race Riots, including news of the governor of Michigan declaring martial law in Detroit.
The letters are packed with fascinating historical details, including:
* Military Training: Highly descriptive accounts of M1 rifle training, target triangulation, and original ink sketches illustrating bullseye sights.
* Anti-Swearing League: A fantastic typed letter detailing the formation of an active “Anti-Swearing League” among the soldiers, complete with a one-penny fine for each swear word.
* WWII Homefront Culture: References to the USO, including a striking “IDLE GOSSIP SINKS SHIPS” footer, canceled furloughs, college physics and trigonometry training, and detailed breakdowns of soldier pay.
* Original Artwork and Humor: An amusing, hand-drawn cartoon sketch depicting a trip to the dentist involving a box of TNT.
* Everyday Military Life: Personal accounts offering an intimate look at the experiences, routines, education, and perspectives of American soldiers during World War II.
This is a cohesive, deeply narrative, and remarkably legible historical archive. Its combination of personal correspondence, military training details, original illustrations, and contemporary commentary on major racial conflicts makes it a compelling addition to a museum, university archive, or advanced World War II homefront collection.
