Stunning 4+ Lb. Boxwork & Botryoidal Display Specimen
Locality: Ketcherside Gap, Taum Sauk Caldera, Missouri
This is a massive, highly aesthetic cabinet specimen pulled straight from the iron and manganese-rich geology of the Taum Sauk caldera at Ketcherside Gap. It features a spectacular natural contrast in both texture and mineralogy that makes it a true centerpiece for any regional locality collection.
Specimen Highlights:
The Exterior: A rugged, heavily textured honeycomb of classic boxwork structure (limonite/goethite) formed through the natural weathering of primary minerals.
The Interior: A deep, natural vug lined with smooth, dark botryoidal formations of hematite and manganese oxides (pyrolusite).
The Rim: The opening of the vug is beautifully framed by a distinct, grayish-white layer of banded chalcedony/agate that precipitated before the secondary oxides took over.
This piece sits perfectly on its own for display and showcases the raw, complex volcanic geology of the region.
