DESCRIPTION:
Original WWII souvenir nightclub photograph in its original folder — the personal photo of a U.S. Navy purchasing officer on a night out in wartime New York. PHYSICAL ORIGINAL, not a copy or reprint.
THE FOLDER: "CLUB 18 — JACK WHITE AND Gang — 20 WEST 52nd STREET, N.Y.C." — the blue, white and red souvenir folder of Jack White's Club 18, the famous 52nd Street celebrity nightclub. On the back: "For Additional Copies, Ask For No." with the copy number penciled in.
THE PHOTOGRAPH: black-and-white, mounted in the folder's window — a table at the club, drinks down, everybody laughing. At the center, in uniform, is Lt. William A. Taylor, Supply Corps, USNR, of the Navy Purchasing Office, New York (90 Church Street), photographed with three companions during his New York posting, 1942 to May 1943. The photo comes out of Taylor's own wartime files — the same officer whose purchasing-office papers (letters, contracts and orders signed by or to him, 1942–1945) survive in quantity — and the officer in the picture is Taylor himself.
A one-of-a-kind personal piece: not a document, but the man himself, off duty on 52nd Street while his office was buying for the wartime Navy by day. Sold as the complete folder with the photograph mounted as found.
