Klemm & Brother was a musical instrument importing firm and music publisher established in Philadelphia in 1819 by brothers Johann George Klemm and Frederick August Klemm. They primarily imported instruments from their family in Germany and also manufactured their own instruments. The business operated at various addresses in Philadelphia, including 705 Market Street, and remained active until around 1879.
Some of their instruments (and sheet music) are in various Museums, including; the Smithsonian, the National Museum of American History, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the Austin-Marie Guitar Collection, the Levy Sheet Music Collection, the National Music Museum in Vermillion South Dakota, and the Historic New Orleans Collection among others.
Included are four CDV photographs of: o-founder Georg Klemm (CDV of painting), co-founder Frederick Augustus Klemm, his wife Julia Henriette Fredericke (Schumann) Klemm, their son John George Klemm, and his wife Maria (James) Klemm and daughter Eva Regina Klemm, Marie Jeannette Werr. Most of the photographs were taken by Frederick Gunekunst / Edward P. Hipple in Philadelphia in 1866 and sent back to relatives in Germany but two are from Berlin.John George Klemm was president of the historic Bachelor's Barge Club in Philadelphia for 49 years.
