An antique cooper's flagging iron, a rare barrel maker's tool from the United States. Hand forged, this collectible item is an authentic piece of woodworking history. Perfect for enthusiasts of vintage tools and the woodworking trade, this flagging iron holds value as a unique and functional piece from the past.
What flagging is: Coopers traditionally packed dried flag leaves (reeds or rushes, often cattail or sedge) between the staves to make the cask watertight. The soft plant fiber swells when it gets wet and fills small gaps that the wood alone wouldn’t close. This was especially important for tight cooperage, meaning barrels meant to hold liquids like beer, wine, or spirits. It was also used in the croze, the groove cut near the ends of the staves that holds the heads (the flat ends) of the barrel.
What the iron does: The flagging iron is a thin, flat-bladed tool, often with a slightly curved or chisel-like end. The cooper uses it to push and tuck the flag into the seams between staves, or into the croze, so the reed sits snugly without damaging the wood. Tapping it with a mallet drives the flag in deeper.
