Dear Sir,
I have received your letter telling me of your interesting collection of autographs and letters, and asking for my signature.
I fear my signature will not be as interesting or valuable as those you have already obtained as it was not my privilege to do any actual fighting in the great war, as although
I was to hoist my Flag in one of the Squadrons of the Grand Fleet in October 1914, the war broke out in August, so I was retained at the Admiralty as Third Sea Lord and it was my [special] business for the first 2 ½ years to augment our Fleet as largely and rapidly as possible.
In the circumstances the only lines which seem applicable to myself are:— "They also serve who only stand and wait"!
