Original 19th-century carte-de-visite photograph of Louis-Adolphe Thiers (1797–1877), prominent French statesman and later President of the French Republic.
Photographed by noted Paris photographer Charles Reutlinger (Ch. Reutlinger). The mount is printed on the front “CH. REUTLINGER. PHOT” and “Garanti d’après nature.” The sitter is identified in period manuscript as “Thiers” on both the front and reverse.
The verso retains Reutlinger’s elaborate studio backmark with heraldic device and both Paris addresses:
21 Boulevard Montmartre
112 Rue Richelieu
Paris
This style of Reutlinger mount appears consistent with the 1860s, potentially predating the studio’s later backmarks advertising its award at the 1867 Paris Exposition Universelle. The dating should therefore be regarded as approximate.
Thiers was one of the major political figures of 19th-century France and served as President of the French Republic from 1871 to 1873. Reutlinger portraits of Thiers are represented in major institutional photographic collections.
This is an original albumen carte-de-visite photograph, not a later engraving, lithograph, or modern reproduction. At the time of listing, other Thiers material may be available on , but this appears to be an uncommon opportunity to acquire an original photographic CDV portrait by Reutlinger.
Condition: Significant age-related fading to the albumen image, particularly in the surrounding field, with the sitter’s face and upper body remaining clearly visible. Expected toning, spotting, light soiling, and edge/corner wear consistent with a photograph of this age. The Reutlinger backmark remains clearly legible. Please examine all photographs for condition.
