Description

An exceptionally choice and rare ancient Roman solid silver ring dating to the height of the Roman Empire, circa 200 AD. The ring features a remarkably bold, deep-set design with a highly elevated, heavy sheet-silver box collet setting.

Housed perfectly within this prominent high-walled bezel is a vibrant, translucent fiery red-orange carnelian or red jasper cabochon stone. The stone is shaped into a smooth, high-domed oval that brilliantly catches and channels ambient light.

The ring is built on a distinctively structured band that flares out into flattened shoulders right beneath the raised crown setting. The silver has aged to a beautiful, authentic deep metallic tone with classic horn-silver gray tarnish lines. The deep gaps around the base of the red cabochon and the inner corners of the bezel walls are packed tight with an untouched, bone-white compacted calcareous burial soil matrix, providing excellent eye appeal and absolute verification of its ancient age.

Historical Context

In Roman society, finger rings made of precious silver paired with bright carnelian stones were high-status personal luxury items. While bronze rings were worn by the general populace, silver settings belonged to affluent Roman citizens, merchants, or military officers.

Bright red and orange stones like carnelian held immense cultural and symbolic value throughout the empire. Beyond their beauty, red stones were widely worn as personal protective talismans. They were believed to strengthen the wearer’s vital spirits, ward off sickness, bring good fortune, and grant courage to the owner. This compact size 5 ring was an elite personal possession, likely belonging to a wealthy Roman Roman matron or youth.

Condition & Authenticity
  • Condition: Excellent archaeological condition. The silver structure is entirely sound, rigid, and safe to wear. The carnelian stone remains completely intact, glossy, and rock-solid inside its original hand-crimped ancient setting.
