Unfortunately, I do not have documentation establishing when or where it was originally acquired.HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCEShepard Fairey created the original “Andre the Giant Has a Posse” design in 1989 while attending the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, Rhode Island. Initially circulated among members of the skateboarding, punk, graffiti and underground-art communities, the André image eventually developed into Fairey’s internationally recognized OBEY Giant campaign.This pinback uses imagery closely associated with that important early period of street-art history. Its small size, primitive construction and visibly aged condition make it an especially interesting piece of underground-style art and cultural ephemera.DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTIONThe front features a bold black portrait of André the Giant against a bright yellow background beneath a clear, glossy domed covering. The piece has a metal shell with a simple open-wire pin mechanism on the back.A small, intentionally heart-shaped piece of blue-and-white striped woven fabric was found tucked inside the back of the button beneath the pin mechanism. Its original purpose is unknown. It may have been used as backing, padding or reinforcement, or it may have been a personal decorative addition by the original owner.The heart-shaped fabric is now detached and shows fraying, staining and age-related wear. It will be included with the button exactly as found because it may be part of the piece’s personal history.ATTRIBUTION AND AGEThis button is unsigned and unmarked. There is no visible date, manufacturer’s name, Shepard Fairey signature, OBEY wording or “Has a Posse” text.The exact age, maker and production history are unknown. The handmade-looking construction and visible aging raise the possibility that it could be an early underground, fan-distributed or campaign-era piece. The yellow background has uneven coloration and visible patina.The metal back, interior and pin mechanism show oxidation, tarnishing, darkening and rust. The pin is old and sharply pointed. It has not been cleaned, polished, restored or repaired and is recommended primarily for collection or display rather than regular wear.The heart-shaped striped fabric insert is detached, frayed, stained and worn.
