- Ague: In the 1800s, "ague" was a common medical term used to describe the recurring, violent shaking chills and high fevers highly characteristic of malaria.
- Bilious Diseases: The card references "bilious diseases," an archaic term used to describe conditions thought to stem from an excess of bile, often associated with liver issues, digestive problems, jaundice, and fevers.
- Distribution Depots: The card lists wholesale depots at 72 John Street, New York, and 529 Market St., San Francisco, highlighting the widespread commercial distribution of patent medicines across the United States during the late 19th century.
Overview of the Spooky Halloween Ghouls Illustration, Advertising
- Title/Theme: Titled "Annihilation of the Enemies of Mankind", the artwork features an anthropomorphized box of Mason & Pollard's Anti-Malaria Pills boxing and defeating personified demons or imps labeled as "Malaria," "Disease," and "Fever".
- Type: It belongs to the historic American patent medicine (or "quack medicine") era, when manufacturers distributed colorful, dramatic trade cards to promote cure-alls and tonics.
- Claims: The text describes the product as "an infallible remedy for fever & ague and all bilious diseases" as well as "a perfect tonic, a sure preventative against and a positive harmless remedy for malaria, fever, & ague and biliousness."
