Item Description:
Rare Antique Mid-19th Century Lacquered Papier-Mâché Pocket Cigar Case
Features Original "J.P.H." Greyhound Trade Label & Archaic "SEGARS." Gold StencilingUp for sale is an incredibly rare, highly collectible mid-19th-century pocket tobacco/cigar case (portasigari) from the Biedermeier / Early Victorian era (circa 1840s–1850s). This piece is a premier crossover artifact, highly desirable for collectors of European decorative arts, fine papier-mâché, and early Anglo-American tobacciana. The Artwork (Front):
The front features a beautifully executed, hand-painted/transfer-printed Romantic miniature scene depicting two young women bathing by a secluded pool, while two men observe them from the background trees. This playful, slightly risqué narrative composition remains vibrant with deep greens, rich crimson drapery, and detailed flesh tones under an authentic, finely crazed original lacquer finish. The Reverse & Export Context:
The reverse side is hand-finished in deep black lacquer and prominently stenciled with the word "SEGARS." in bright gold gilt lettering. This archaic phonetic spelling peaked in the United States and Great Britain between 1820 and 1860, proving this luxury item was custom-manufactured by a continental European artisan specifically for the booming English-speaking import market.
The Rare Internal "J.P.H." Greyhound Label:
Opening the case reveals a split two-pocket accordion bellows design. Affixed inside is the holy grail for antique collectors: the original oval blue trade label featuring a leaping/running greyhound logo and the manufacturer's initials "J.P.H." Pocket items of this age were heavily used, meaning internal paper labels almost never survive.
Finding this hallmark completely intact drastically increases the historical and investment value of the piece.
Condition Report:
This item is in honest, untouched antique condition, displaying a beautiful patina that cannot be faked.
• Exterior: The lacquered artwork is bright and clear with fine, age-appropriate craquelure/crazing. There is minor rubbing and edge wear to the rigid papier-mâché panels consistent with pocket carry.
• Interior: The original leather/paper accordion side gussets show visible splitting and separation along the flexible folds (see detailed photos). The internal divider is present, and the rare paper maker's label is crisp, clear, and perfectly legible. This is a marvelous, investment-grade piece of 19th-century tobacciana history.
